The Digital Explorer is based around expeditions taking small groups of pupils overseas and using the latest digital media, satellite and internet technologies to beam their experiences back to the classroom.
Since the beginning of 2006, we have powered two expeditions. We are currently looking for new partners to continue to bring more of the world to the classroom. Please contact the Digital Explorer if you are interested in using the Digital Explorer methodology.
Offscreen Student Expedition
Working with the Offscreen Education Programme, the Digital Explorer took 9 UK students to Dubai and Oman. The students worked to create an alternative image of the Middle East for the UK clasroom and each day they transmitted video, images and artwork back via the internet.
Eastbury Comprehensive Toubkal Expedition
In March 2006, 14 pupils from Eastbury Comprehensive School trialled the Digital Explorer methodology in the High Atlas Mountains and Marrakech. The highlights of the trip were interactive sessions between the students in the mountains and their peers in the classroom, and the first successful testing of a satellite modem to update a website on a student expedition. The expedition received an Innovative Geography Teaching Grant from the Royal Geographical Society.
